The country code for The Netherlands is 31, for the United States it is 1. VISA Invitations For those traveling from outside of the EU, USA or Canada, you may need to get a VISA for your stay in Amsterdam. Contact your local government for more information. Download the invitation letter, fill in the information and then email to visainvite@casualconnect.org. [download VISA letter] Getting Around With a compact city size, lots of bike riders and good public transit - you will not need to rent a car. For all planned events, you should be fine walking around the city. If you are lazy or need transport for other reasons - there are plenty of taxis you can hail on the street in the city to take you around. If you need a taxi call: +31 (0)20-777 77 77. Try to have a map of where you are going with you so you don't get lost! Travel from/to AMS Airport Train After exiting passport control & customs follow the signs to the train ground transportation. You will know that you have found the right place when you see the huge red and white checkered meeting point. The automatic ticket machines do not take foreign credit cards or cash - so find the ticket counter. It is a long counter with lots of booths that is probably to your right. If you can get a roundtrip ticket, do so at this time. You must get a ticket before getting on the train - they check for tickets every time! (so don't be one of those dumb tourists and not have a ticket) Take the train into the Amsterdam City Center, you can take train 1 or 2, and sometimes 3 - it is best to ask at the ticket counter which train platform to stand at. Trains come very frequently, so don't stress if you just miss one. When you get on the train walk up or down 1/2 flight of stairs to your right an left inside the train if you want to sit, but you can wait in the area right when you get on if you have large/heavy bags. It is the third (3rd) stop from AMS airport to the City Center. Train tickets are about 3 € each way. Taxi We have never taken a taxi from the airport, but we do know two groups who have. Both of them got lost on the way to the hotel from the airport. So please make sure to have the hotel map and address with you when you board the taxi. If you take a taxi - it is about 40 € so make sure to have enough cash in Euros before getting into the taxi. Food The food in Amsterdam is generally very good, and since we descend upon Amsterdam outside of the normal tourist season - restaurants are accessible. If you would like to plan ahead: [View Restaurant reviews for you at iens.nl!] Weather! In February, the average high is 42F/6C and the average low is 31F/-1C. This is winter guys! Bring a winter coat, gloves and a hat if you are bald. It also may be a bit rainy, so an umbrella is advised. [View Amsterdam weather forecast] |
